This study is a critical exploration of the numerous and varied representations of masculinity that emerged in New York City in the 1980s, especially insofar as they affected many forms of racial conflict. The general, interdisciplinary, cultural studies concern for the relations between masculinity and racial tension gains a specific focus through an examination of representative works from four different media: fiction, film, television, and music.

Through critical readings of Tom Wolfe's novel, The Bonfire of the Vanities (1987), Spike Lee's film, Do the Right Thing (1989), Bill Cosby's The Cosby Show (1984-92), and the music of Chuck D/Public Enemy (1987-90), this dissertation explores the socio-political history of New York City in the 1980s when intensified forms of masculinity crises contributed to a significant increase in everyday race violence that often reveal destructive tendencies when role norms cannot be obtained. Each text offers different constructions of masculinities where the protagonist either reinforces the hegemonic position of what manliness represents or fails to obtain such a position, resulting in masculine crisis and disdain for other races.

This inquiry borrows from the work of experts in several areas of study including those with immense knowledge of the history of New York City and the dynamic of its construction and inner-workings as well as those experts at the forefront in the examination of the construction of male identities, who either theorize about its past structure or its expanding representative possibilities beyond limiting sex role norms. Last of all, this polycentric study of masculinity expects to get beneath the surface of made masculine facades, since masculinity is not inherent but a fluid social construct where acceptable alternative identities can emerge and assist men in becoming less violent in racial situations and valued members of society.
