A survey of ecotourists (n = 212) identified that previous ecotourism experiences influenced the choice of preferred ectourism environments, but not selected ecotourism attitudes, or the compatibility of environmental, management, or social factors with ecotourist satisfaction. Urban ecotourists significantly favoured cultural-urban environments, whereas natural, rough, and cultural ecotourists preferred natural environments. All ectourists felt negatively about the current global environment but believed it could be protected. Large groups were criticized, while small groups were favoured. Urban ecotourists were least disapproving of factors affecting ecotourist satisfaction in a natural environment; environmental damage was most criticized, while unnatural protective materials, vehicles, and mechanized travel received less criticism. Factors perceived as protecting the environment were received positively, particularly natural materials, restricting user numbers, small groups, and non-mechanized travel. Factor analysis indicated of all variables measured, previous ecotourism experiences had the greatest influence on preferences, attitudes, and reactions to factors involving ecotourism.
