Tourists encounter new people and places. Their travel is a geographic experience. This study concerns American tourists' encounters with Chinese landscapes and suggests ways of enhancing their experiences through understanding how to see ordinary Chinese landscapes. First, I examine current American tourists travel patterns and experiences in China; then I develop the geographic concepts of landscape; and finally I show how specific elements in the landscape can be used in understanding the history and dynamics of Chinese civilization. The markers of the Chinese landscape are exemplified in four frequently visited Chinese tourist cities--Xi'an, Beijing, Hangzhou, and Kunming.Subjects--Topical Terms:

At present tourist experiences in China are limited. Travel agents direct almost all tourists to historical monuments and spectacular scenic sights. In the process, tourists come to know little of ordinary urban and rural scenes. This uneven touristic experience can be enriched by adding an informed study of ordinary or vernacular landscapes to visits to the more spectacular sights found in most destination areas. Ordinary Chinese landscapes carry cultural meaning and provoke interest in their own right. They also lead to insights into major regional differences within China.

The urban and rural areas of Xi'an, Beijing, Hangzhou and Kunming display rich and revealing cultural patterns. The urban landscape markers, seen as street patterns, built forms, and land uses, illustrate the distinctive features of traditional Chinese cities and their social transformations. The rural landscape markers of farm houses, village settlements, and field patterns and crops portray regional differences based on natural environmental features and differences in regional culture.

Urban and rural landscape markers of these four Chinese areas provide evidence of cultural inscription, social transformation and effects of cultural ecology. These markers enable observant travelers to identify cultural patterns within the physical landscape and to discover functional and regional differences among Chinese places. By adding an insight into Chinese culture as revealed in ordinary landscapes to a knowledge of Chinese history, tourists can greatly expand their travel experience. Awareness of ordinary Chinese landscapes extends foreign tourists' understanding of Chinese culture and society and provides a broader base for the "tourist industry" of China.
