This study explores the influential people, conditions, and events which guided the direction of the performance careers in the lives of six pianists: Clara Schumann, Teresa Carreno, Rosalyn Tureck, Alicia de Larrocha, Martha Argerich, and Mitsuko Uchida. I was greatly motivated by a personal quest to discover the roots of artistry in women, who have traditionally had to overcome obstacles related to the dual roles implicit in family and in the performance profession.

520 $a Starting with an exposition of themes which defined the beginnings of artistic development, I looked at both childhood and adulthood experiences of six pianists to examine significant factors that shaped their career paths. Crucial familial and professional supports involved family members and teachers, as well as fellow musicians who provided emotional connections and musical partnerships which served to advance their careers. Additionally, personal issues such as competition outcomes, family crises and transitions, and political conflicts all contributed to the development of artistry in these pianists, which revealed there were multiple paths that led to success.
520 $a In adulthood, interactions between family and career brought both tension and fulfillment, which were negotiated through individual choices. Models representing these choices are constructed and discussed in terms responses to individual challenges and conflicts. In the recapitulations, themes prominent in childhood reappear transformed through this process of making individual choices: Artistry is achieved through an individually-conceived equilibrium of the personal and professional.
