This paper provides a literature review that establishes the foundation and understanding of Polanyi's knowledge dimensions: tacit and explicit. These knowledge dimensions and associated characteristics only exist in a philosophical environment. Many authors have taken these philosophical dimensions and tried to apply them to improve management principles. Based on research summarized in this paper, these authors do not agree on the definition of tacit knowledge or the concepts that should be applied to it, except that it is highly personal and un-expressible. None of the authors addressed whether or not Polanyi's assertions that explicit and tacit knowledge exist are in fact true.

The tacit dimension was tested by empirical study using a selected population of two (2) classes of graduate students in a Masters in Technology Management program. The results of this study indicate that the tacit dimension exists for this population with an effect size greater than 0.8. The test was conducted using at) alpha of 0.05 (one-tail).
