Thesis (M.S.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2006.
Complex training generally involves the use of a heavy preload exercise followed relatively quickly by a biomechanically similar plyometric exercise. These exercises are completed set-for-set, with the belief that the heavy preload exercise will enhance acute performance of the subsequent plyometric exercise. This phenomenon is most widely referred to as Post-Activation Potentiation. It is on the theory of Past-Activation Potentiation that complex training is based. It is theorized that if an acute facilitation in muscular power is achieved by Post-Activation Potentiation, then a chronic complex training protocol will result in greater gains in muscular power than performing the exercises separately. Although the use of complex training has grown among the strength and conditioning community, optimal complex training protocols to elicit the greatest Post-Activation Potentiation are largely unexplored.
