This study investigated the impact of physical exercise on the psychological well-being of older adults. Sedentary but alert and oriented inpatients, including those with long-term, complex medical problems, and outpatient senior citizens with fewer medical problems, share common symptoms of aging including memory deficits and mental fatigue. Research suggests that the effects of aging can be delayed in persons who stay physically fit. Seventeen residents of an assisted living nursing home and 17 individuals who lived in the community attended one of two structured exercise groups three times per week for a 6-week period. Residents were assigned to one of two groups that differed on order of presentation of the intervention. Program effects were assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and Thayer's Activation Deactivation Adjective Checklist Mood Scale, referenced as AD ACL or Thayer's Mood Scale in this study. Individuals in the study who had been participating long term and those individuals who had only recently begun participating in a consistent exercise schedule equally improved on most psychological measures; however, the findings revealed no difference between the groups on levels of depression. The lethargy levels, as measured by the responses on the AD ACL, of older participants decreased, but the levels of younger participants showed no change. The individuals who exercised irregularly showed increased levels of energy after participating in the program. To clarify this pattern of results, which marginally supports the benefit of a short-term exercise intervention, a larger scale study should be undertaken. Participation of older adults in a regular exercise program has many social benefits, including reduced costs to the health care system, fewer hip fractures from falls; decreased incidence of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes; an improved quality of life resulting from a more active lifestyle; maintenance and refinement of social skills; and increases in self-esteem and self-confidence.
