Thesis (Ph.D.)--Walden University, 1998.
This study examined the knowledge of tuberculosis (TB) infection control by health practitioners in the Chicago area. It was prompted by the resurgence of occupationally acquired tuberculosis infections and the re-emergence of Multiple Drug Resistant strains (MDR), both of which pose a serious health challenge calling for a concerted effort to both study and implement effective preventive measures. The health belief model was used as a frame-of-reference for developing a survey about health care workers' knowledge of CDC standards and about the use of precautionary protocols for prevention in their work. A questionnaire was distributed to 41 sites in which workers were engaged in the treatment of TB. The survey instrument contained questions of knowledge of TB communication processes, demographic and institutional characteristics, and practitioner awareness of precautionary measures. Seventy-one percent of the sites responded. Data analysis revealed a direct, positive relationship between expressed adherence to CDC recommendations for practitioners' own safety, their knowledge of TB communication process, and their age, experience, and the type of facility providing care. The health belief model was found to be useful for the study of institutional and personal factors that impact compliance.
