The purpose was to test the reliability and validity of CBCT generated cephalograms created using DolphinRTM software compared to a PlanmecaRTM digital lateral cephalogram.

Twenty subjects had an i-CATRTM CBCT image and a PlanmecaRTM digital cephalogram taken on the same day. Four cephalogram types created from Dolphin 10.0RTM and the digital cephalogram were traced twice by the same observer.

There were three distinct patterns of variation found for each landmark. ME was less than 1 mm for all methods. 78% of the landmarks were significantly different from each other for the PM compared to the PERS and these differences were greater in the horizontal axis.

Overall, reliability was good for all of the methods. The PlanmecaRTM digital lateral cephalogram and the DolphinRTM CBCT generated Perspective lateral cephalogram were significantly different from each other and these differences were more problematic in the horizontal direction.
