Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2006.
There are small colleges that have problems attracting and retaining students, and as a result, confronting financial difficulties. The purposes of this study were to investigate whether delivering courses and programs online could help a college in attracting more students and lowering its attrition rates. Other goals of the study were to determine what online course delivery formats were more appropriate for these colleges to put into practice. For this purpose, the study employed a mixed methodology of qualitative and quantitative approaches. The target population was 9 small universities and colleges in Connecticut that offered courses and programs online. Data were collected through individual interviews, a questionnaire, and document review.

The results of the study showed that although offering online courses could bring more revenue to a college, it could not be considered as a quick solution for those colleges with financial problem. The major finding of the study was that by offering blended or hybrid courses, colleges could solve their retention problem to some extent. Combining best features of classroom teaching with advantages of online environment can help a college retain some of its students. Most of the interviewees in the current study pointed to the proper instructional design as the most important element of any course development whether online or blended.
