Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Toronto (Canada), 2006.
This dissertation tests a set of plausible hypotheses about the reasons behind recent immigrant homeownership declines in Canada's largest Census Metropolitan Areas. It assesses how changes in demographic composition, immigrant recency, socioeconomic status (chapter 2), skin colour (chapter 3), and homeownership-relevant group characteristics (chapter 4), have altered immigrant homeownership rates over the past 30 years. Although each chapter shares a similar focus, each employs a distinct methodology and addresses a unique set of research questions. The majority of the immigrant decline of recent years remains unexplained, suggesting that changes in age, income, education, family type, skin color, and the proportion of group members in homeownership-relevant industries are not responsible.
