This is a study of eighteen high-achieving, economically disadvantaged, English learners of Mexican descent who transcended numerous obstacles in order to make a personal dream come true. Monolingual in Spanish upon arrival in California, they received English as a Second Language instruction in the public school system while embarking upon a journey of cultural adaptation and personal transformation that would eventually lead them to higher education. What major factors contributed to their academic success? This is the main question the study sought to answer.

The data originated from in-depth interviews with Mexican individuals who had obtained a high school diploma on time and achieved a college degree, or were making good progress toward obtaining one. From their own lived experiences, these men and women were able to offer valuable insights into the personal traits, cultural values, attitudinal patterns, and institutional practices that are typically associated with academically successful linguistic and ethnic minority students. Their insights are particularly interesting in light of the high proportion of Mexican students who have been historically outperformed in school by their non-Hispanic White peers.

The study revealed that for the participants under investigation academic achievement resulted from a combination of factors, both internal and external. The former included a clear understanding of what the participants did not want in their future, high educational aspirations, a positive perception of their ethnic identity coupled with healthy self-esteem, and unwavering inner drive to prove wrong the racial stereotypical portrayal of Mexican people. The latter encompassed parental support for education, extensive participation in extracurricular activities and afterschool enrichment programs, the strong presence of a mentor who believed in the participants and guided them through the college application process, financial aid for college-related expenses, and the numerous services provided by the library.
