Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of South Carolina, 2006.
In the study discussed in this dissertation, the transactional, transformational, and transformative leadership approaches used by four university and college presidents in their successful fundraising activities were analyzed. Bass and Avolio's (2004) concept of transactional and transformational leadership was used as the framework for analyzing how these presidents used specific behaviors and characteristics in fundraising activities, and Bornstein's (2003) transformative leadership concept was used to examine how these presidents synthesized transactional and transformational approaches in different situations.

The data collected in this study indicate that all four presidents use a transformative leadership approach in their fundraising activities. However, even though these presidents use transactional and transformational leadership approaches, the results show that transformational approaches (i.e., idealized influence, individualized consideration, intellectual stimulation, and inspirational motivation) enhance fundraising. There are likely other leadership approaches that may strengthen fundraising, and the researcher recommends that additional research should be conducted to identify these approaches.
