My dissertation, Sexual Revolutions: Desire as Redemption in the Twentieth-Century Dystopian Novel, argues that authors of twentieth-century dystopian fiction present sexual desire as the path to metaphysical insight from within the totalitarian state. Although a sense of absolute right and wrong had traditionally depended on religious faith, these writers---faced with an atrophying culture of belief in the divine---located moral accountability in eroticism, which they perceived to be the one aspect of the self that could never be fully colonized by the establishment. In four chapters covering six novels, my analysis proceeds from the least to the most repressive regimes, exploring how illicit desire assumes increasing importance as the source of both ethical wisdom and social renewal. From the critical perspective provided by this genre, my analysis ultimately questions current attempts to legislate morality and criminalize certain sexual behaviors and identities.
