Cain Lanamna 'The Law of Couples' is an Old Irish law tract dated to the beginning of the eighth century CE which is part of the Senchas Mar tradition of legal texts. The only continuous copy of the tract is found in the Trinity College, Dublin MS H.2.15A in a section dated to the beginning of the fourteenth century. It was copied by two scribes and the hands of at least eight others can be found amongst the glosses and marginal notes. This law tract concerns itself with the different types of recognized unions in early medieval Ireland and details the procedures for the division of property for each of these unions in the event of a divorce. Any union between a man and a woman that can produce offspring is considered to be a recognized union, even if the union is illegal, e.g. a union by rape. The text also provides a wide range of details in the context of the agrarian economy of medieval Ireland concerning the running of a medieval household, e.gg. the procedure for processing woad for making blue dye and flax for making linen. This dissertation provides, for the first time, a complete edition and English translation, textual notes, and introductions to both the manuscript sources and legal principles of not only the entire law tract, but also the numerous glosses and commentaries that accompany the text.
