Child adoption is a vivid part of America's heritage. This paper explores the history of adoption, myths and misperceptions surrounding the practice, evolving definitions of "family," and beliefs about foster care adoption as it compares to other types. It focuses on Los Angeles County, where Latino children are in foster care in disproportionate numbers, and studies show that structural and cultural barriers may prevent Latinos from adopting.

This paper does not take a stance on what is best for every family. It does, however, acknowledge the need to replace myths and misperceptions with truth and honesty, and promote adoption as another way to create a family.
