Thesis (M.A.)--Central Missouri State University, 2006.
This qualitative study utilizes symbolic interactionism to study the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program. The question posed was why this program continues to thrive despite the continuing controversy over its effectiveness. Data was collected through observations, interviews, and literature reviews, then compiled and analyzed using thematic elements of Erving Goffman's dramaturgical analysis. Organizational aspects of this program, as well as the symbolic themes of impression management and stigma, were studied. The conclusion of this research was that D.A.R.E. is both an organization and a program whereby effectiveness emerges through supporting the fundamental conservative political values of education, security, and family.
