The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of integrated study skills instruction on student achievement. This study examined the impact of integrated study skills instruction on African-American adolescents in an English Language Arts course. The targeted population consisted of middle school students from a community in New York City. The quasiexperimental method and stratified random sampling were used; pretest-posttest control group design was also used. There were 113 participants---57 in the control group and 56 in the treatment group. The treatment participants were instructed in a collaborative (group) setting; the control participants were instructed in a metacognitive (individual) setting. The pretest and posttest were parallel tests that measured the critical thinking ability of the participants. Both groups were provided parallel instruction and study material. Participants received study skills instruction for 10 sessions. When pretest and posttest data were compared, it indicated that there was a significant improvement in test scores; the control and treatment groups improved significantly. However, the treatment group indicated a greater gain than the control group. Findings indicated that there was a positive correlation that suggests integrated study skills instruction made a significant impact on student achievement.
