This study had three main purposes: to determine the overall need for IT at a small liberal arts university; to measure the extent to which IT improved student academic performance; and to discover the institution's management cost savings attributable to IT. To ascertain student performance with IT, we tested 96 CIS101 first semester freshmen from six classes at the university. After a pretest to all 96, the students were divided into experimental and control groups, A and B respectively. Group A was given a stimulus of advance IT knowledge to see if that would impact its posttest performance. Both groups were then given the next computer test (posttest) which, with almost the same topics as the first but with one level higher, was expected to reveal the influence the stimulus must have had on the experimental group that received it. Each group's pretest was subtracted from its posttest scores. Group A's scores were evidently superior and, with an SPSS paired t test, showed a p value considerably less than .001. This small value indicates that there is a low probability that an observed difference is due to chance, implying statistical significance, the effect of the stimulus. For the control group, a p value of .353 was found, a large value implying that there is a high probability that an observed difference is due to a sample variation (chance) indicating absence of the stimulus. The qualitative survey, general and interview questions further reinforced the quantitative statistical findings, showing that indeed IT was needed at the campus, improved student performance and saved the University substantial management dollars.
