Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2005.
This study examined the relationship between Subjective Well-being (SWB) and academic achievement in 109 college students from a selected private college in Southeast Michigan. More specifically, it was hypothesized that students' levels of subjective well-being (SWB) would be positively correlated with their final grade in an "Introduction to Psychology" course. It was also hypothesized that students who self-reported the highest levels of SWB would obtain a higher grade in the course than students who reported the lowest levels of SWB. The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and the Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS) were used to measure the students' level of SWB on day one of their Introduction to Psychology course, and academic achievement was measured by the student's final grade in the psychology course. Ultimately, SWB was positively related to students' final grade. Additionally, an independent samples t-test resulted in a significant difference of more than one letter grade between the mean final grades of students with higher than average SWB over the mean final grades of students with lower than average levels of SWB. A discussion of the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the study are presented.
