Pediculosis humanus capitis or head lice are a common and growing problem for elementary school age students and their care takers. Students are frequently absent from school and much money is spent on the eradication of head lice. Educational materials that are developed for care takers are written above the desired reading level and are therefore difficult to understand when treating head lice. There is a need for the development of an educational tool that is organized, concise, neat, to-the-point, and written on the appropriate grade reading level that can be easily understood by the care taker. The goal of this project was to develop such a tool. Permission to develop and distribute a newly designed educational tool must be obtained from three separate departments within the county school system. The first department is the Coordinator of Student Services along with the Coordinator of Nursing Services who assures that the tool is in alignment with the local school systems regulations and protocols. Upon their recommendation, the tool will then go to the Assistant Superintendent for Education who reviews all information that will be sent home to the parent's school wide to assure that the information is in alignment with the school's Policy and Regulation Manual. Upon approval from the Assistant Superintendent for Education, the tool will then be forwarded to the local Health Officer for the County Health Department. The Health Officer will review the tool to make sure that the information is in alignment with all policies and procedures for the County Health Department. After approval of the newly developed educational tool for the eradication of head lice from all three departments, the tool will be printed and placed in the school nurse's office where it will be available for distribution to the students and their care takers.
