This work determined if gamma radiation could be used to remove trichloroethylene (TCE) from various sample waste solutions, and estimated the product compounds formed by the interaction of the gamma radiation with the solutions. Two types of sample matrices were tested; samples consisting of high concentration solutions containing either neat TCE or a two phase aqueous sample of TCE, and low concentration solutions containing between 10 ppm and 200 ppm TCE in aqueous solution. The aqueous solvents consisted of either pure water of various ionic states of iron in pure water.Subjects--Topical Terms:

All samples were irradiated at a constant dose rate of approximately 200,000 rads per hour. Gamma dose to the high concentration samples ranged from 11 to 99 megarads; dose to the low concentration samples ranged from 50 to 200 kilorad. All samples were liquid-liquid extracted into diethyl ether or pentane post irradiation, and analyzed using gas chromatography with mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) or gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC/FID).

High concentration sample results showed compounds with molecular weights greater than TCE being formed during irradiation. GC/MS data indicated similar product results for all ionic iron solutions, and different product results for the samples containing TCE in pure water. The pure TCE samples showed a reaction product profile very different from that of either the water or ionic iron solutions. The profiles were seen in all cases to be essentially constant with varying dose. The extent of reaction for the samples indicated that the TCE was most effectively destroyed in the pure water samples; the TCE in pure water sample irradiated to 99 MRad indicated production of a solid product along with a viscosity increase in the TCE bead.

The low concentration sample results showed complete removal of the TCE from all tested solutions at exposures at or above 100 kilorad. No reaction products were detected by the gas chromatography in the extracted samples. The presence of ionic iron in the solution had no effect on the TCE removal rate.

The study concluded that gamma irradiation is a potential means for eliminating TCE from waste solutions. Gamma radiolysis efficiently destroys TCE in low concentration solutions at moderate exposures. Very high exposures are required for full removal of bulk TCE, and at high concentrations the process generates high molecular weight compounds which vary by the solution composition.
