Two related projects were conducted using supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) to investigate quantitative extraction of two herbicides from soil constituents and soils, and the effects of interactions among parameters, such as different types of herbicides, soil constituents and soils, and the conditions of the soil system (i.e., time, temperature, and moisture).

In the first study, 14C thienyl-3-labeled dimethenamid [2-chloro-N-[(1-methyl-2-methoxy)ethyl]-N-(2,4-dimethyl-thien-3-yl)-acetamide] or 14C phenyl-labeled prosulfuron [1-(4-methoxy-6-methyl-triazine-2-yl)-3-[2-(3,3,3-trifluoropropyl)-phenylsulfonyl]-urea] was applied to Quartz Sand (QS), a mixture of QS-Soil Organic Matter (SOM) or QS-Montmorillonite (MONT), and Norfolk loamy sand (fine-loamy, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Kandiudult) and Webster clay loam (fine-loamy, mixed, mesic Typic Endoaquoll) soils for six hr incubation period. And, each herbicide also was applied to a mixture of QS-SOM, QS-MONT or QS-SOM-MONT for a 30-day incubation period in ambient (25°C) or frozen (-25°C) condition. Under the optimum SFE conditions, high extractability of dimethenamid and prosulfuron (81--93%) was obtained from samples incubated for six hr. Different degrees of herbicide-soil constituent interaction may affect SFE extractability. In the samples for the 30-day incubation period, it was revealed that the extractability of the herbicides increased as temperature decreased. Each herbicide differently interacted with each mixture of soil constituents in ambient or frozen condition. Additionally, soil organic matter enhanced the retention of dimethenamid and prosulfuron relative to montmorillonite clay.

The second study was conducted to investigate the effects of time, temperature, and moisture content on SFE of 14C-labeled dimethenamid and prosulfuron from Webster clay loam soil. Soil samples spiked with dimethenamid or prosulfuron were incubated for up to 84 days under ambient (25°C), frozen (-15°C) and three different moisture levels: 3%, 15%, and 30%. Herbicide extraction decreased as incubation time, temperature and incubation moisture level increased.
