The effects of aqueous supporting electrolytes on the electrode reaction of the CoW12O405-/6- couple and the self-exchange reaction of the AlW12O405-/6- couple were determined. The minor dependence of the CoW12O40 5-/6- half wave potentials on the nature and concentration of the cations, together with the absence of significant cation effects on diffusion coefficients and reaction volumes, indicate that cation-anion pairing is limited in these media. AlW12O405-/6- self-exchange rates were substantially accelerated with increasing cation concentration in the sequence Li+ < Na+ < K+ < Rb+, with parallel decreases in activation enthalpy and entropy in the opposite order. These results indicate specific cation catalysis that is separate from ion-pairing or ionic strength effects. A reaction mechanism in which a partially dehydrated cation facilitates electron transfer by forming a bridge between the reactants is suggested. Studies of the PW 12O403-/4- self-exchange kinetics were precluded by large NMR relaxation times.
