My dissertation explores the limits of representation, and the dialectic relation between two distinct cultures in what Kristeva sees as "the stranger within ourselves". It is composed of two main parts. In the first part, I analyze the depiction of the Chinese Coolie as an exoticized subject, opening the debate on how to "represent" this immigrant. I challenge the traditional characterization limited to ethnographic and racial elements, taking a critical approach on the notion of representation itself. The recreation of the lives of these "exotic" indentured servants and their descendants, conveyed in their fictionalization from a realist as well as a neo-baroque perspective, complicates the discourses about the writing of history; the implementation of a nationalist discourse; the aesthetic criticism on the concept of "representation"; and the conflict between unified identities and the presence of dissonant Asian immigrants. This dissertation draws from the critical theories of Michel de Certeau, Lisa Lowe and Julia Kushigian, among others, to elucidate how the Chinese Coolie and the Chinese has been characterized and problematize these homogenizing tendencies of the "exotic" Asian.

520 $a In the second part, through the analysis of haiku, I challenge this parameter by positioning my argument against the Latin American representation of the "other" to that of representing Latin America through the "other". Through haiku, the Latin American space is now the object of representation. I therefore displace the traditional representative form from "subject" to that of "object". I argue that since haiku is an imported form that depends on Latin American space---geography, climate, time, etc.---in order to manifest its poetic value, it problematizes cultural hierarchy: instead of representing a subject through Latin American literature, Latin America is now the object of representation through an adopted Japanese literary tradition. My overall aim in the dissertation is therefore to make a contribution towards the emerging work being done on bridging Asia and Latin America through literature. The authors I consider in the first two chapters are Fernando de Trazegnies, Siu Kam Wen and Severo Sarduy. As for the second half, I analyze haikus written by Jose Juan Tablada and members of the Brazilian Gremio Haicai Ipe.
