Thesis (M.C.Sc.)--Dalhousie University (Canada), 2005.
Mobile Agent Technology (MAT) is a very promising and attractive paradigm in many fields, particularly in the field of electronic commerce. In a Mobile Agent Based E-Commerce System (MAECS), the buyers initialize mobile shopping agents that can move from one seller site to another through the Internet to make a comparison shop for a particular item. However, like all other mobile agent systems, the fault tolerance issue, which could be a serious obstacle to hamper MAT to be used in real applications, is a major concern in MAECS. In this thesis, I will present a new fault tolerance hierarchical architecture for MAECS. This architecture shows good performance of availability and can detect different failures promptly. An improved checkpointing and rollback recovery algorithm is also introduced to let systems make effective checkpoints and thus recover from failures. The architecture is partially implemented and good results achieved from experiments may show that the proposed solution is feasible and promising for future improvement.
