Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Alabama in Huntsville, 2005.
Recently, work teams have come into common and formal use. The usage of teams has created issues for human resource personnel responsible for evaluating training and for the engineering manager for evaluation of the team throughout the life of a project. The dissertation research described herein offers a survey instrument that measures team success, that is, teams that have experienced both group development and performance, with the characteristics of being short, reliable, valid, and applicable to engineering teams. The survey instrument, the Team Success Questionnaire (TSQ), is an 11-question self report survey. Ninety-eight engineers were garnered for this research. The results show the reliability of the TSQ as highly consistent with a Cronbach's alpha value of 0.94. Factor analysis supports the single construct of team success. A status of group development and a performance survey were utilized for construct validity. Results showed that the TSQ correlates with status of group development with a correlation value of 0.82 as well as with performance with a correlation of 0.67. Discriminate validity was obtained using the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability scale with a correlation to the TSQ of 0.06. Concurrent validity was obtained in relation to performance with a correlation value of 0.23. The TSQ is applicable over a wide range of team training levels, is not affected by gender, and is also not affected by team size, experience, or percent dedicated to the task. The TSQ is a short, reliable, and valid survey that can be used to replace multiple surveys necessary to capture team success for use by both human resource personnel and engineering managers.
