Thesis (M.A.)--Roosevelt University, 2006.
The effect of anxiety on cognitive functioning was investigated. Data was obtained from 935 participants (635 females and 300 males) from the Rush Religious Orders Study who were administered a neuropsychological battery (tests of episodic memory, semantic memory, working memory, perceptual speed, and visuospatial ability) and the Spielberger (1983) Trait-Anxiety scale during a baseline examination. Anxiety was found to be significant in relation to semantic memory and perceptual speed, but not episodic memory, working memory, and visuospatial ability. These results suggest that anxiety has a remarkable impact on particular aspects of cognition. Anxiety proneness can serve as a portent of cognitive changes that may eventually manifest, a concept which promotes a need to develop preventive measures for both high anxiety and its impact on cognitive functioning.
