As a group, survivors of childhood sexual abuse have a tendency towards developing a plethora of psychological disturbances such as depression, low self-esteem and eating disorders. A poor body image and lack of body awareness can be at the root of such problems as well as potentially leading the survivor into future abusive relationships and situations. The purpose of this paper is to theoretically examine the ways in which the application of a body centered therapy, such as dance and movement therapy (DMT), may be an effective means of nonverbally working through abuse issues, while gaining body-acceptance and improving body-awareness.Subjects--Topical Terms:
