The estimation of two important parameters, the time delay and direction-of-arrival (DOA), at the base station equipped with multiple antennas is proposed for DS-CDMA systems. First, the full rank scheme that requires matrix inversion is analyzed in the short code system. Followed by the reduced rank scheme, which avoids matrix inversion, the efficient computation and improved DOA estimation are achieved. Finally, we extend to the long code system, in which a precoding approach is proposed so as to perform blind DOA estimation.

For any near far resistant receiver, the correlation matrix of the received signal must be obtained. In practice, it has to be estimated from the received data. Then the number of data support, representing the approximation of the time average method to the statistical average one, is an important parameter for the system implementation, since it also corresponds to the allowed synchronization time.

The short data support introduces the mismatch to the system, causing the suppression on the desired signal. The effect of the mismatch can be mitigated by increasing the data support. Then evidently, there is a connection between the output signal power and the data support. We prove that the signal power follows Beta distribution, wherein the data support is a control variable. As the number of data support is large, the density function of the Beta random variable is close to a delta function at value 1, also reflecting the gradual disappearance of the mismatch.

We also propose a beamforming filterbank receiver structure. Compared to the conventional approach for joint delay and DOA estimation which requires stacking up the received 2-D signal to a long vector, the beamforming filterbank transforms the received space-time signal to a beamspace-time counterpart. Then, the stacking up method is avoided, and the faster synchronization can be achieved, due to the less requirement of data support.
