Running at the Sunshine is a 20-minute work for percussion ensemble (six players) and actors based on texts by Jesse Jarrow. Its seven vignettes paint postcard glimpses of the imagined residents of the Sunshine Hotel, one of the last remaining flophouses on Manhattan's Bowery. Each vignette features a unique collection of instruments for the sextet, resulting in different landscapes for the various characters. Jarnow's texts are interspersed throughout the piece, both as melodrama (spoken text with music) and as soliloquy. The placement of the text within the music was arranged in collaboration with choreographer Judith Chaffee before the premier performance, and some of those decisions are reflected in this final score.

The opening and closing movements set the scene and pace of the swarming world outside the Sunshine. The inner movements present soundtracks to the residents' psyches: Lisa's calm amid the metallic clamor of a subway, Droger's sadness in the memories of former employment, Lewis's hazy landscapes of vaudeville dreams, Baxter's obsessive precision in bookkeeping, Sang Gyu's seeming inner calm, and Shapiro's teetering between two worlds. These short and evocative episodes not only remind us of New York's flophouse past, but also suggest to us that given the wrong circumstances, the Sunshine might lay in anyone's future.
