This study explored how youth workers experienced moments of not knowing what to do in the context of their work with young people. Phenomenological descriptions were collected from 12 youth workers in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest, representing various sectors in the field, including mental health, homeless and street youth outreach, GLBT services, transitional living, and more. Using an interpretive phenomenological approach, these descriptions were analyzed individually to identify dominant features. All the descriptions were then analyzed as a group to reveal five common themes of the experience. These included: (a) the paralysis of stuckness, (b) features of despair, (c) humiliation and the fear of being found out, (d) questions of vocation and calling, and (e) the transition from not-knowing to knowing. Each theme was interpreted through the researcher's and participants' lenses, and then presented along with its associated variations.
