Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Pennsylvania State University, 2005.
By the end of World War II, Coca-Cola was well on its way to becoming a primary agent of cultural globalization. Although the term "globalization" would not come into common use until some forty years later, the terms "Coca-Colonization" and "Coca-Colonialism" began to emerge during the 1950s. This phenomenon has been previously analyzed from the perspective of fields such as economics, labor studies, sociology, advertising and marketing, management, and even education. The present study adds a humanistic dimension by showing how Coca-Cola has operated as a signifier with great semiotic power in literary works, primarily but not exclusively from the Americas, by writers who range from the well known (such as Clarice Lispector and Pablo Neruda) to the relatively unknown (such as William T. Campbell and Holger Cordova). Works analyzed include Neruda's "La United Fruit Co." (1950), Clark's Big Beverage (1952), Marcelino Penuelas' "Mr. Clark no toma coca-cola" (1960), Cordova's "todo va peor con Coca-Cola" (1976), Lispector's A hora da estrela (1977), Carles Mengual's "Coca-Cola i Julieta" (1988), and Martin Espada's "Coca-Cola and Coco Frio" (1993). This comparative study demonstrates that from as early as 1950, fiction writers and poets have critiqued, parodied, and argued against the ideologies that Coca-Cola, as beverage and corporation, represents.
