This thesis project proposes a new online newspaper in education (NIE) model that uses Web-based newspapers for teaching and learning in K--12 schools. The proposed model differs from existing online NIE programs, which tend to emphasize print newspapers. The thesis project begins by looking at print-based NIE programs and how they serve newspaper publishers. It then examines what is available for Web-based learning today, and the state of online newspapers and online NIE programs. It demonstrates how the proposed model can work by identifying key elements in successful online learning models and showing how the same key components in newspaper Web sites can be turned into suitable lesson materials. It highlights the benefits of the proposed online NIE model, which can complement the print-based NIE program instead of competing with it. Lastly, the limitations of the proposed model and the need to study its viability and effectiveness as an educational tool are discussed.
