Efficient schemes for the numerical analysis of arbitrary wave-guide structures are presented in this dissertation. The super-resolution algorithms from signal processing techniques, which are employed in the temporal domain, have been used as a post processing engine to extract the frequency-domain information from the 2D FDTD simulated fields. Due to the analytical nature of the solution, this scheme can reduce the computational time dramatically. Unlike the Fourier transformation scheme, only a fraction of sampled data is necessary for the extraction. The scheme is also robust to the numerical errors from the simulation. The scheme has been applied to analysis of lossless or lossy multiconductor transmission lines. The frequency-dependent equivalent circuit parameters are extracted from the modal information obtained.

A new 2D FDTD scheme based on the alternation-direction-implicit (ADI) technique is developed. This scheme removes the stability constraint and guarantees unconditional stability. Selection of the FDTD time step is now dependent only on the modal accuracy. An optimal simulation scheme is given to efficient analysis of conductor loss. The quasi-static field distribution from the finite-difference (FD) method based on the same mesh as that for ADI-FDTD is used as the excitation source. Thus, no disturbance fields components will be initiated in the 2D ADI-FDTD. The results obtained agree well with those obtained from conventional FDTD and from measurement.

An automatic extractor of the equivalent circuit model of high-speed circuits is given. The extractor is integrated with computer-aided-design (CAD) tools. The design files are parsed and design information is projected on the Yee-like mesh. The generated parallel FDTD codes are deployed in a cluster environment.
