Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, Fresno, 2004.
The effectiveness of reduction in depressive symptoms from a synthetic estrogen compared to an herbal estrogen was explored in two groups of menopausal women (n = 66 and n = 63) ranging from 45 to 60 years in age. The hypothesis that there will be a difference in degree of depression between the two groups of women participating in this study was not supported, F(2, 129) = .62, p > .05. A series of post hoc analyses revealed that there was a significant difference between the pretreatment depression scores and posttreatment scores by both treatment groups. Within the herbal hormone replacement group the pretreatment depression scores reported were higher (M = 28.74, SD = 8.79) than were reported posttreatment depression scores ( M = 25.75, SD = 7.97), t(62) = 9.89, p < .001. Similarly, among the medical hormone group, reported pretreatment depression scores were also higher (M = 26.39, SD = 7.91) than were reported posttreatment scores (M = 23.79, SD = 7.42), t(650 = 9.93, p < .001. There was no relationship between the therapy group and group members' ethnicity, chi2(4, N = 129) = 6.68, p > .05. There was no relationship between subjects' age and their pretreatment depression scores, r (129) = .05, p > .05 or posttreatment depression scores, r(129) = .04, p > .05. Future studies were suggested in the text.
