An analytical study of nonlinear dynamic response and control capabilities of Electrorheological (ER) material based adaptive structures is presented. Three-parameter solid viscoelastic model is used to describe ER material behavior in pre-yield regime. The governing differential equations are developed by combining Von Karman nonlinear thin plate equations and ER material constitutive equations. Simulation procedures of stationary random processes are utilized to generate the realizations of random pressure input. A Galerkin-like approach and numerical integration in time domain are used to solve the coupled nonlinear differential equations. The effects of core layer thickness and ER material storage modulus on the response of the adaptive structure are investigated. Numerical results include displacement response histories, spectral densities, root mean square response, probability density histograms and up crossing rates. Suppression of displacement amplitudes and shift of modal natural frequencies are observed. The semi-active control capabilities of ER material based adaptive structures are confirmed.
