The primary goal of this study was to establish a taxonomic key for ammocoetes of three Ichthyomyzon lamprey species. First I demonstrated that formalin and ethanol have significant effects on ammocoete characteristics. Lacking genetic markers for two of the three species, ammocoetes from across the Great Lakes were identified largely using historic adult catch records. Comparison of ammocoete gonads was inconclusive as a technique to verify species identification. Pigmentation patterns, morphometric characters and myomere counts varied significantly among species, but were inadequate for use in a taxonomic key because of high intraspecific variation and overlapping ranges. Chestnut lamprey Ichthyomyzon castaneus, ammocoetes were distinguishable when larger than 105mm by their pigmented lateral line organs, but this character was inconsistent in smaller larvae. Existing taxonomic keys may be misleading for identifying Ichthyomyzon lamprey larvae.
