Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Southern California, 2005.
This study investigated issues in the collaboration process that impacted, positively or negatively, the design, planning, implementation, or continuation of a professional development school (PDS). The purpose of this study was to discover which components of the collaboration process---the situational factors, the structural dimension, the process dimension, and/or the relational dimension---affected the partnership work of one semirural professional development school in the Pacific Northwest. Questions were formed from emergent themes in the collaboration process in PDSs discovered in the literature review on PDS partnerships. These questions were then asked of 18 current and former PDS participants, including teachers, school site administrators, school site coordinators, a school district representative, and university participants.

Findings indicated that all 14 emergent themes from the literature were important to PDS success and must be attended to in all stages of the evolution of the PDS partnership, not just at the beginning. It was discovered that lack of attention to key components in the recent years of the partnership has led to a weakening of partnership links with key stakeholders and a deterioration of PDS processes.

The implications of this study suggested that for PDS partnerships to thrive and continue long term, (a) the PDS must continually be a central focus to the mission of the school and the university, (b) the principal is critical to PDS success, (c) communication lines among and between PDS partners must be strong and well maintained, and (d) leadership capacity must be built within the school so that new leaders can take the place of key individuals who eventually leave the partnership.
