Nearly three-fourths of the U.S. Latino/a population affiliates with Christianity and numerous congregations count both U.S. Anglos and Latino/as among their membership. This dissertation offers a framework for thinking critically about the intersection of Christian practices, Latino/a popular religious practices, and the religious education of Latino/as in the United States. I argue that the assimilation of U.S. Latino/as into the dominant religious cultures of the United States will diminish both Latino/a and Anglo communities. Instead, I advocate for models of religious education which can nurture and sustain a range of distinctive traditions by encouraging conversation and mutual critique across these differences. I argue that practices are as important as beliefs and that U.S. Latino/a popular religious practices should be considered as Christian practices. One implication calls for religion teacher education to adopt a Christian practice-based approach to religious education that integrates an understanding of U.S. Latino/a popular religious practices, traditions, and culture. It calls on students and teachers to reflect critically on their experiences of religious practices. Chapter One surveys U.S. Latino/a demographic data and cultural norms. Chapter Two presents Mary Boys's definition of religious education and examines her thinking on the intrinsic connection between traditions and transformation. Chapter Three surveys the emerging body of literature on the role of the Christian practices in religious education and formation, particularly the writing of Dorothy Bass and Craig Dykstra. A project of Lilly Endowment, Inc., Bass and Dykstra gather groups of scholars to think about the connection between faith and practices in ways that challenge excessive individualism in the United States' culture. Chapter Four provides a description and analysis of Latino/a popular religion in the United States, focusing on the roles of women in popular religion, the importance of family and social networks, and the strong link between popular religious practices and expressions of ethnic and national identity. Finally, Chapter Five examines the implications of Christian practices and Latino/a popular religious practices for Latino/a religious education in the United States.
