Thesis (M.P.H.)--The University of Texas Medical Branch Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, 2005.
Waterborne illness is responsible for a large portion of deaths worldwide, especially in developing countries where effective water treatment may not be available. Transmission of these diseases between a household water supply and the environment occurs when water has direct contact with polluted outside sources. Likewise, contaminated wastewater from households is reintroduced back into the environment when not properly treated. In stark contrast, the closed loop water resource systems of a proposed future moon or Mars space base keeps transmission from occurring by maintaining control over the water source and excluding the entrance and exit of water from the surrounding environment. By applying this closed loop concept to household water supplies in developing nations, transmission of waterborne disease is minimized. This capstone experience will propose a simple, inexpensive and practical household water system based on this closed-loop concept for use in developing nations.
