Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a crop of great potential in Puerto Rico, grown mostly in the mountain region in small, diversified farms. Ginger can be grown in coastal areas where intensive management practices can be implemented to increase production and quality. A field experiment was established on Coto clay (Very Fine, Kaolinitic lsohyperthermic Typic Eutrustox) to evaluate the effect of nitrogen fertilization on growth and performance of ginger. Four nitrogen treatments (0, 56, 112 y 168 kg/ha) were evaluated using a Complete Randomize Block design, with four replications. Urea was the nitrogen source and it was applied by fertigation. One fourth of the fertilizer was applied at 2 months after planting and the remaining in two equal fertigations at 6 and 8 months after planting. Potassium and phosphorous were applied at a rate of 180 kg/ha. Foliar and rhizome samples were collected on a monthly basis, beginning at two months after planting to evaluate nutrient absorption and crop growth. No significant differences were observed in nutrient uptake due to nitrogen treatments, however significant differences in nitrogen and potassium content were observed between early growth stages and maturity. Harvesting was performed at eight and a half months after planting. The highest rhizome yield (68.9 t/ha) was obtained with the application of 112 kg/ha of nitrogen. This treatment outyielded significantly the 0 kg/ha nitrogen treatment, but it was not significantly different from the 56 and 168 kg/ha treatments. The results suggest that an application of 90 to 100 kg/ha of nitrogen is necessary to obtain optimum yields of the crop.
