Thesis (M.S.)--University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez (Puerto Rico), 2005.
Phaseolus vulgaris, L. bean lines and cultivars: G18252, XAN 201, Arroyo Loro, Morales, Salagnac 90A, IPA 7, IPA 10, BAT 477, and VAX 1, were studied for aluminum tolerance. BAT 477 and VAX 1 were used as controls. A 0 and 35 ppm Al+3 concentrations were evaluated in a Hoagland solution with silica sand as supporting medium (pH ≈ 4.8). At 35 ppm Al 3+, shoot and root dry weight of lines and cultivars decreased significantly when compared to the 0 treatment. Significant differences were observed among lines and cultivars at 0 Al3+. IPA 7 showed a higher K root content than the others. No significant differences were observed in Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Al content among lines and cultivars. At both concentrations, Salagnac 90A and IPA 7 were among the best in root and shoot dry weight, and nutrient uptake. A 35 ppm Al3+ concentration may have masked real differences between lines and cultivars. A 20 to 30 ppm Al+3 is suggested for future studies.
