Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Claremont Graduate University, 2005.
This dissertation briefly addresses the lack of academic scholarship written in English regarding the "cancion ranchera" and its classification as a male dominated genre replete with misogynist lyrics and non-existent archetypal icons. This work counters that void with a reconstruction of the bodies of work of the first "queens" of the cancion ranchera, starting with Lucha Reyes. Her musical career paralleled the rise of feminism in Mexico, the legacy of the soldadera and the impact of the Technological Revolution on Mexico's economy.

Reyes developed an interpretive method called the "estido bravio" as a backlash against the hegemony of the Culture of Modernity. This ideology gauged the economic success of Mexican society by rigidly controlling the morality of its women and developing a six-level classification system that intended to spur the economic development of Mexico. The estilo bravio specifically challenges all aspects of this mindset.

The estido bravio consists of ten characteristics that re-gender songs to create a pre-feminist consciousness for women listeners: changing pronouns in songs; the intent of the lyrics; the intended audience; the object of desire; creating alternate interpretations of the songs; adopting a powerful presence on stage; demanding respect as a musician; questioning male privilege; challenging sexual norms; and interweaving personal narrative with performance.

Pre-feminist consciousness consists of three traits: recognition of a shared membership and interest with the group known as women; awareness and rejection of women's unequal status in society; and, support for collective or individual action to change the unequal status.

The development of the estido bravio by the subsequent queens of the cancion ranchera, Lola Beltran, Amalia Mendoza, and Lucha Villa, expanded the initial realm of popularity of the genre, transitioning from the working class to the middle and upper classes. The estido bravio changed how audiences perceived their schema of life, and altered the discussion of male/female relations by transfiguring the object of desire discussed in the lyrics.
