Quantico Creek is located in Prince William Forest Park in Prince William County, VA. The Quantico Marine Corps Base and three housing projects border the National Park. The North Fork begins within the park, the South Fork begins on the Marine Corps Base, and they merge in the southeastern corner of the Park. My research goals were to determine if, (a) the pyrite mine, military activities, Park use, or residential developments were adding trace metals to the stream, (b) stream water metal concentrations during storms in these areas exceed USEPA limits, and (c) metal concentrations in the sediment and water have been decreasing. The metals to be researched were cadmium, copper, lead and zinc.

Water and sediment samples were collected at twenty-one sites along the entire creek network and analyzed for metal concentration. Storm water samples were collected with the goal to analyze the water and sediment in equilibrium that would allow the calculation of a partition coefficient. This coefficient was used to provide a straightforward relationship between the water and sediment metal concentrations. The stream sediment at the reclaimed pyrite mine site exhibited evidence of contamination. The data were not consistent with the Marine Corps Base as a source of metal contamination in South Fork sediment. Elevated metal concentration levels consistent with anthropogenic input were found in the sediment downstream of the Park fire roads and the reclaimed mine sight. Metal concentration levels in sediments downstream of other roadways, parking lots, camping areas, and residential developments were not substantially above background. At only a couple of sites were there any indication that stream water metal concentration exceeded USEPA limits during storm conditions. A comparison between previous and new data suggested that, at most sites, metal concentration had decreased. A comparison between the North Fork and South Fork metal concentrations in the sediment was very similar for all four metals.
