Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 2005.
Mexican Catholics have begun the practice of sharing testimonies to account for changes in their lives and to exercise their faiths---in ways that detract from popular religious devotions that once constituted the core of Mexican Catholic identities. The dissertation accounts for this development, and analyzes numerous testimonies, or testimonios, recorded through fieldwork in Tala, Jalisco, and among recent migrants and immigrants in Indianapolis, Indiana. My analysis is concerned primarily with drawing connections between some common intertextual elements of testimonios and the possibilities for individuals to reform identities and reinforce solidarities in the midst of such changes as the restructuring of local and global economies, the multiplication and expansion of social ties between sites in Mexico and the US, the growth in influence of Pentecostalism, and shifts in pastoral strategies of the Catholic Church. I show that the testimonio is a medium through which individuals can achieve personal and communal transformations that serve as critical adaptations to their transnational statuses.
