Land planning processes and management frameworks in the Adirondack Park have progressed since its inception in 1892. One such process is the Unit Management Planning (UMP) process, established by the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan (Executive Law §816, 1972). The SLMP mandates two agencies, the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Adirondack Park Agency, to collaboratively write these UMPs. This exploratory research used a multimethod approach to study planning and management within the Adirondack Forest Preserve. The first method, a single case study, was conducted on the McKenzie Mountain Wilderness Area (MMWA) Unit Management Plan. The researcher acted as participant and observer while writing and coordinating the team draft of the MMWA UMP. The second method, nonscheduled-standardized interviews, was conducted with participants and observers of the UMP process for planning and management in the Adirondack Forest Preserve. These addressed the two purposes of the study: (1) to participate through the case study research design in the UMP process and to assess its effectiveness, and (2) to interview UMP participants and observers to assess the UMP process in the context of the framework/process established for planning and management for the Adirondack Forest Preserve UMPs.
