Thesis (Ph.D.)--Georgetown University, 2005.
Chapter 1 presents a noncompetitive labor market with two sectors, a high-wage and a low-wage sector, and two types of workers. This study is based on Acemoglu (2001) who finds in an homogeneous-worker version of the model that instituting labor market policies as an unemployment insurance and a minimum wage can shift the job composition toward high-wage jobs, increase the number of high-wage jobs and increase welfare. I find, however, that if workers are heterogeneous, those policies do not necessary improve job composition and they never increase the number of high-wage jobs. Welfare can still increase.

Chapter 2 investigates the efficiency of human and physical capital investments in a matching model with high- and low-skill jobs and workers. Search frictions and ex-post bargaining imply that wage inequality arises as a result of the difference in investment costs between the sectors. The efficiency properties of the equilibrium are analyzed under the particular division in bargaining proposed by Hosios (1990). The general conclusion is that the equilibrium is inefficient and that, depending on the matching assumption and the relative magnitude of human and physical capital costs, it can involve either under- or over-investment in the high-skill sector.

Chapter 3, written in collaboration with James Albrecht and Susan Vroman, develops a search and matching model to analyze the effect of labor market policies in an economy with a significant informal sector. Depending on their productivity levels, some workers only work in the formal sector, others work only in the informal sector, and an intermediate group of workers goes back and forth between the formal and the informal sectors. Labor market policy, in addition to its direct effects on the formal sector, affects the composition and size of the formal and informal sectors. Although results suggest that reducing labor market regulations increases net output, a large informal sector can exist in an economy with a flexible labor market.
