This study compares the usefulness of soil water measurement approaches using Watermark soil moisture sensors and the portable Hydrosense Soil Water Content Measurement System with estimates of crop evapotranspiration for planning orchard irrigations. Watermark soil moisture sensors and the Hydrosense were calibrated to measure changes in soil water content and used to measure orchard water use between irrigations. Measured orchard water use was compared to Hargreaves and FAO56 Penman-Montieth estimated crop evapotranspiration. Hargreaves and FAO56 Penman-Montieth estimated evapotranspiration produced similar results. Correlation between measured orchard water use and Hargreaves estimated orchard evapotranspiration ranged from r2 = 0.01, SE = 9.5 mm to r2 = 0.97, SE = 2.3 mm. Correlation between measured orchard water use and FAO56 Penman-Montieth estimated orchard evapotranspiration ranged from r2 = 0.01, SE = 8.6 mm to r2 = 0.94, SE = 3.3 mm. Growers can improve the accuracy of irrigation scheduling by using measurements of soil water content and estimates of crop evapotranspiration.
