Web blight (WB), caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn, is an important common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) disease. At present, common bean cultivars and breeding lines have only moderate levels of resistance to web blight. Because other species of Phaseolus have proven to be sources of resistance to other bean diseases of economic importance, 99 accessions of P. coccineus and P. polyanthus were screened for reaction to web blight using a detached-leaf inoculation technique. All of the P. polyanthus accessions were susceptible to the fungus. G35163 was the most resistant P. coccineus accession, with less leaf damage and smaller mean lesion size than the other accessions in the trial. Accessions G35007 and G35066 expressed moderate levels of resistance to the web blight pathogen, with intermediate leaf damage scores at 72 hours after inoculation in the detached-leaf assays. These results were confirmed in a second detached-leaf evaluation. Digital imaging provided precise estimates of lesion size on the leaflets. However, the most important criteria for evaluating these accessions was the degree of penetration of the fungus into the leaf tissue. An F4 interspecific population from the crosses P. vulgaris 5-593 x P. coccineus G35006 and P. vulgaris ICA Pijao x P. coccineus G35006 expressed a moderate level of resistance to web blight in the field.
